Stories! Tales! Drama! Action! Humor!

Everyone loves a story! Stories are a great way for young readers to get started on their reading journey.
Rapunzel retold by Alan Trussell-CullenFamiliar stories like folk tales and fables and myths and legends can all be very helpful when learning to read. The fact that children may already know or have heard stories like Cinderella and The Gingerbread Man helps support their fledgling reading strategies and skills.

Ask Einstein by Alan Trussell-CullenChildren also respond to stories about the real world they live in. Stories about pets work well (e.g. Two Timer, or Ask Einstein). So too do stories  about people they know (e.g. Birthday Present for Mom or The Day Our Teacher Lost Her Voice).
And of course, they really relate to stories about the experiences of being a child (e.g. Duck Feet or Tag Along).

The Mystery of the One Purple Glove by Alan Trussell-CullenAnd as their skills and confidence grows they will want to take on more challenging reading tasks, like chapter books. Here they’ll be pushed along by exciting plots and interesting characters.
